List of Famous Freedom Fighters from Uttar Pradesh
The history of Uttar Pradesh has run concurrently with the history of the country during and after the British rule, but it is also well-known that the contribution of the people of the State in the Indian War of Independence had been significant.
Before India's independence, region was called United Provinces which was renamed as "Uttar Pradesh" after independence. This state has given eight India's prime ministers.
Freedom Fighters from Uttar Pradesh
1. Bakht Khan
He was Subedar in the British East India Company and commander-in-chief of Indian rebel forces in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the East India Company. He was born in Bijnor in Rohilkhand (North-western Region of Uttar Pradesh).
2. Begum Hazrat Mahal
She is popularly known as 'Begum of Awadh' or 'Hazrat Mahal'. She rebelled with the band of supporters, led by Raja Jailal Singh against the British East India Company during the Indian Mutiny of 1857 in Lucknow. She was from Faizabad (Uttar Pradesh).
3. Mangal Pandey
He was one of the Indian soldiers who played important role in the outbreak of the Indian rebellion of 1857. He was sepoy in the 34th Regiment of Bengal Native infantry of British East India Company. He is regarded as the hero of Indian Mutiny of 1857. He was born in Nagwa, a village of upper Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh.
4. Maulvi Liaquat Ali
He was religious leader from Allahabad and prominent leader of the Indian rebellion of 1857.
5. Rani Lakshmibai, Rani (Queen) of Jhansi
She was the queen of the princely state of Jhansi currently present in Jhansi district in Uttar Pradesh, India. She was one of the prominent leaders who rebel against British Raj. She revolted against British Raj because her adopted son was not considered as the real heir. So, she revolted to protect her throne for her adopted son, i.e. Damodar Rao.
6. Rao Kadam Singh
He was a leader of a minor group of Gurjars who fought against the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. He is popularly known as the raja of Parikshitgarh and Mawana in Meerut district.
7. Jhalkari Bai
She had served in the women's army of Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi and played an important role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
8. Acharya Narendra Dev
He was one of the leading theorists of the Congress Socialist Party in India. His democratic socialism renounced violent means as a matter of principle and embraced the Satyagraha as a revolutionary tactic. He advocated the abolition of poverty and exploitation not just through the Marxist materialist dialectic but especially on moral and humanistic grounds.
9. Asaf Ali
He was one of the Indian freedom fighter. He was the first ambassador from India to the United States. He also worked as the Governor of Odisha. He was from Seohara, North-Western Provinces, and British India (Now in Uttar Pradesh).
10. Ashfaqullah Khan
He was from Shahjahanpur, North-Western Provinces, British India (Now in Uttar Pradesh). He was one of the revolutionary freedom fighter in Indian independence movement. He along with Ram Prasad Bismil, Rajendra Lahiri, Thakur Roshan Singh, Sachindra Bakshi, Chandrashekar Azad, Keshab Chakravarthy, Banwari Lal, Mukundi Lal, Manmathnath Gupta looted the train carrying British government money in Kakori near Lucknow.
11. Chandra Shekhar Azad
His birth name was Chandra Shekhar Tiwari but popularly known as by his self-taken name Azad ("The Free"). He is well-known Indian revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under its new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA)after the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan.
12. Chittu Pandey
He was described as the "Tiger of Ballia" by Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose because of his impeccable leadership during Quit India Movement. He was born in Rattuchak, a village in Ballia District of Uttar Pradesh.
13. Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi
He was from Kanpur and well-known face of Non-cooperation Movement. He was journalist by profession and the founder-editor of the Hindi language newspaper, Pratap.
14. Govind Ballabh Pant
He was Indian freedom fighter and one of the architects of modern India. He was extremely capable lawyers who initially represent Ramprasad Bismill, Ashfaqulla Khan and other revolutionaries involved in the Kakori case in the mid-1920s. He was he Chief Minister of the United Provinces from 1937 to 1939. After independence, he served as Union Home Minister from 1955–1961.
15. Hasrat Mohani
He was well-known Urdu poet and prominent Indian freedom fighter. The famous slogan Inquilab Zindabad (that translates to "Long live the revolution!") in 1921 was given by him. He was the first man who demanded complete independence for India in 1921 at the Ahmedabad Session of the Indian National Congress. He was from Unnao district of United Provinces in British India.
16. Mahavir Tyagi
He was a prominent Indian freedom fighter and famous parliamentarian from Dehra Dun, Uttar Pradesh (now in Uttarakhand) India. He leads the Kisan (peasant) movement under the banner of Indian National Congress.
17. Maulana Mohammad Ali
He is popularly known as Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar. He was elected to become the President of Indian National Congress party in 1923 and ; also one of the founders and presidents of the All-India Muslim League.
18. Maulana Shaukat Ali
He was an Indian Muslim leader of the Khilafat Movement that erupted in response to the fall of the Ottoman Empire.He served as member of the 'Central Assembly' in British India from 1934 to 1938.
19. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari
He was an Indian nationalist and political leader and former president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement. He was one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University and remained its chancellor 1928 to 1936. He was from Yusufpur-Mohammadabad town in eastern Uttar Pradesh).
20. Munishwar Dutt Upadhyay
He was an Indian politician, statesman, and leader in the Indian independence movement. He was from Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh.
21. Purushottam Das Tandon
He was one of the Indian freedom fighter who is remembered for his efforts in achieving the Official Language of India status for Hindi. He was customarily given the title Rajarishi(etymology: Raja + Rishi = Royal Saint).
22. Rafi Ahmed Kidwai
He was a politician, an Indian independence activist and a socialist whose socialism sometimes described as an Islamic socialist. He was from Barabanki District of United Provinces (now Uttar Pradesh). He was India's first Minister for Communications of Independent India.
23. Raja Mahendra Pratap
He was journalist, writer, and Marxist revolutionary social reformist of India and President of first Provisional Government of India. He was born to the princely jat family of state of Mursan in the Hathras District of Uttar Pradesh.
24. Rajendra Lahiri
He was associated with the Hindustan Republican Association aimed at ousting the British from India. He also took part in the Dakshineswar bombing incident and absconded.
25. Ram Manohar Lohia
He was founding member of Congress Socialist Party. He was also editor of Congress Socialist and worked with the Congress which was broadcast secretly from various places in Bombay until 1942.
26. Ram Prasad Bismil
He was an Indian revolutionary who participated in Mainpuri conspiracy of 1918, and the Kakori conspiracy of 1925. He was also well-known patriotic poet and wrote in Hindi and Urdu using the pen names Ram, Agyat and Bismil.
27. Swami Sahajanand Saraswati
He was from Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh. He was Social reformer, historian, philosopher, writer, ascetic, revolutionary, Marxist, politician who work for the betterment of India. His social and political activities focussed mostly on Bihar in the initial days, and gradually spread to the rest of India with the formation of the All India Kisan Sabha.
28. Dhan Singh Gurjar
He was the Indian Kotwal (police chief) of Meerut who actively participated in the 1857 rebellion and led initial actions against the British East India Company in Meerut.
29. Vijay Singh Pathik
He was popularly known as Rashtriya Pathik and real name was Bhoop Singh. He was among the first Indian revolutionaries who lit the torch of freedom movement against British rule.
